About the
Your Simple Golf Swing Method
The Your Simple Golf Swing method has it’s roots in the teaching of Mike Dunaway and Mike Austin. For those who don’t know who much about them, please read the section dedicated to each. There are a few instructors out on the web who are disciples of Mike Austin and each of them teach the Mike Austin method from their unique perspective or interpretation of what Mike Austin taught. Mike Dunaway was Mike Austin’s protégé and spent many years under Austin’s wing. The two men made hours and hours of teaching video together. Mike Dunaway wrote his own book ‘Hit it Hard; The Modern Fundamentals of Power Golf’. Dunaway also produced his own instructional DVD called ‘World’s Best Driver” (picture on the left). In both his book and his video, there are subtle indications that Mike Dunaway did not advocate everything that he was taught by Austin. This is probably why you seldom hear any mention of Dunaway by true Austin Disciples. The truth is, Dunaway took the best of what Mike Austin taught and simplified it by removing some unnecessary movements. Dunaway didn’t teach the same hand movements that Austin taught. Austin taught a hand release that started from the top of the swing. Although it does have merit in terms of producing clubhead speed, it can be difficult to time perfectly without hours and hours of practice. Another potential problem with the early hand release is maintaining consistent accuracy. Mike Dunaway advocated a less ‘handsy’ swing motion in order to eliminate the accuracy problem. Now don’t get me wrong, I spent a great deal of time learning the Austin way and it is awesome on those days when your whole body seems to be in sync and your timing is perfect. But on those days when your timing and rhythm seem to allude you, it’s a struggle to play good golf. I found my biggest miss on my off days was nasty high hook with all my irons. Dunaway quieted the hands. Although you’ll see him talk a lot about releasing from the top in the videos he made with Austin, he doesn’t mention it in his book. In fact, in his own instructional video, he actually says that he doesn’t feel his hands release until right at or just after impact. Mike Austin said he was always trying to hit the ball further, and that because of that he had some issues with accuracy. Dunaway was known for incredible distance with incredible accuracy. I think quieting the hands played a big part in that. When I developed Your Simple Golf Swing, I took all Austin taught, incorporated the simplifications Dunaway contributed, and then simplified even more. Austin developed the most efficient swing every devised, Dunaway made it more efficient, then I made it even more efficient.
